Honors Core 3--- Week of November 14-18

Monday 11/14
1.  Homework Check - if you were absent, make sure you check your answers to HW#33.  The key is
     posted outside my classroom door.
2.  Domain & Range - practice day 2
Again, the key is not included in the practice, so check your answers with my key and/or talk to me about
     what you need to!
3.  Short PC - multiply polynomials
No Homework Tonight!

Tuesday, 11/15
1.  Last Domain & Range practice... again, no answers here so be sure to ask!
2.  Finding Patterns... what pattern exsists when you multiply 2 binomials?
      Ex:   (x + 2)(x + 3) -->  x2 + 5x + 6
              (x - 1)(x + 4) -->  x2 + 3x - 4
3.  Problems in book:
page 211: #6 (writing the pattern)
page 211: #7 (using the pattern to write the standard form equations in factored form)
Homework:  WS #34

Wednesday, 11/16
Homework Check - if you were absent, make sure you check your work using the key in the hall.  If you have questions, see me.  If not, turn it in to the bin.
Last Domain & Range Practice... this time it really is the last.  (I realized that I hadn't given students a chance to work on advanced opportunities, so I included them today.)  Keys will be posted in the hall at the end of today.  Tomorrow will be the re-take on Domain & Range - for sure!
Homework - Worksheet practice factoring + advanced practice
*Absent- check your folder when you return.  I couldn't post online (copyrighted)
Some students have asked for the MathTV link to factoring trinomials.  Although I can't say that this will help absent students learn the process, it might help those who were in class and just need to see it again.  We'll continue to work on this concept for the next few days, so don't panic!  Please see me if you feel you need help, however!
http://www.mathtv.com/ - then choose (on the left side)...
    Algebra
      Under Algebra, choose Factoring
Under Factoring, choose Trinomials with a=1
Then choose either problem #1 or #2 - you can choose your teacher.
Another site you might try for an example or two is Kahn Academy - click here for a tutorial on factoring trinomials.

Thursday, 11/17
- homework check - questions and answers
- factoring a common factor demonstration - in a nutshell, it's reverse distribution
Note:  I cannot access MathTV on any computer (I've tried 3) so I've found another website that MIGHT help if you need a refresher or need a demo.  Try here.... Kahn Academy for starters.
- factor completely demonstration - the best example I can find online is here
While none of these videos is extremely exciting, they MIGHT provide a refresher from class or an introduction if you weren't in class.  Be sure to come get help as soon as you can!
HOMEWORK - Worksheet #35

Friday, 11/18
- homework check
- factoring trinomials with a leading coefficient
demo 3 methods: area model, guess & check factors and factor by grouping
Factor by grouping is the most straightforward, reliable and consistent method BUT it is not necessarily the shortest.  There some good demonstrations online for this method, I've included a few below.  If you need a quick refresher - this might do the trick!
1. Kahn Academy
2. You Tube --- This one multiplies the binomials first (which might be helpful) and if you want to skip this part, forward to about 2:55 for the factoring portion.

HOMEWORK - Worksheet #35 (oops!) Sorry,  I cannot post due do copy write laws.  Get it from me when you return if you were absent.
Do only problems #1, 3, 5, 6 & 8 --- the others are advanced practice only. -
